[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- губе́рнія (gubérnija) — Pre-reform orthography (1918)
- губ. (gub.) (abbreviation)
Etymology
[edit]Probably from a reanalysis of губерна́тор (gubernátor, “governor”), modeled on импе́рия (impérija, “empire”) < импера́тор (imperátor, “emperor”). Compare Polish gubernia, generally described as borrowed from the Russian term; however, Smirnov (1910) believed that the direction of borrowing was the opposite.
