Etymology[edit]

Comes from Old Church Slavonic юсеница (jusenica). Compare Ukrainian гусениця (husenycja), усениця (usenycja), Bulgarian гъсеница (gǎsenica), въсеница (vǎsenica), Serbo-Croatian гусеница, Slovenian gosenica, vosenica, Czech housenka, Slovak husenica, Polish wąsienica, gąsienica, Upper Sorbian husańca, Lower Sorbian guseńca. Probably from Proto-Slavic *ǫsěnica. The initial г (g)- can be explained by the influence of Common Slavonic гоущерица (gušterica, lizard) (Russian я́щерица (jáščerica)), and is not related to Russian гусь (gusʹ).
