From Proto-Slavic *žārь, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷher- (to heat). Cognate with Hindi गर्म (garm) and Hindi गर्मी (garmī), Albanian zjarr, Old Armenian ջեր (ǰer), Latin fornāx, Old Norse varmr, Old Prussian goro (hearth; stove).
