From кус ‎(kus) +‎ -ок ‎(-ok), from Proto-Slavic *kǫsъ ‎(piece), from *kǫsati ‎(to bite).

Cognate with Slovak kus, Slovene kos, Serbo-Croatian кус/kus, Bulgarian къс ‎(kǎs). Non-Slavic cognates include Sanskrit खादति ‎(khādati, he chews), Persian خاییدن ‎(xāyīdan, to chew).
