From Proto-Permic *ku̇ni, from Proto-Uralic *kuδa-. Cognates include Erzya кодамс (kodams) and Finnish kutoa.

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian кыны (kyny) and Komi-Permyak кыны (kyny).
