Russian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]- According to Erich Berneker and Max Vasmer, from ма́терь (máterʹ) + -и́к (-ík).
- Accentologically, according to Andrey Zaliznyak, from матеро́й (materój) + -и́к (-ík) with a right-stressed substitutive subjective suffix. As well as временно́й (vremennój) → временни́к (vremenník), мелочно́й (meločnój) → мелочни́к (meločník), but варёный (varjónyj) → варе́ник (varénik), ры́жий (rýžij) → ры́жик (rýžik).
