From Proto-Slavic *myti (Old Church Slavonic мꙑти (myti), мꙑѭтъ (myjǫtŭ)), from Proto-Indo-European *muH- + reflexive -ся, from Old Church Slavonic сѧ (). Cognate with Bulgarian мия, Serbian мити, Czech myti, Polish myć; and with Lithuanian maudyti, Latvian maut.
