From народ (narod, people, nation) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ вла́да (vláda, (political) power, dominion) +‎ (-ja), a calque of Ancient Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía). Compare демокра́тія (demokrátija), a borrowing from Ancient Greek.
