[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic начѧти (načęti), from Proto-Slavic *načęti. By surface analysis, на- (na-) + -чать (-čatʹ), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (“new, fresh”), whence English recent and ceno-.
