Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *něměti, from *němъ + *-ěti. By surface analysis, німи́й (nimýj) +‎ -і́ти (-íty). Compare Russian неме́ть (nemétʹ), Belarusian няме́ць (njamjécʹ), Polish niemieć.
