From Middle Persian 𐭥𐭠𐭰 (wāz, word, speech), from Proto-Iranian *vaxša-, from Proto-Indo-European *wōkʷs (speech, voice). Cognate with Sanskrit वाच् (vā́c) and Latin vōx.
