Etymology

From Old East Slavic олѣи (olěi, olive oil), from Proto-Slavic *olějь. Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἔλαιον (élaion) or Latin oleum.

Cognate with Belarusian алей (aljej), Bulgarian елей (elej), Lower Sorbian wolej, Polish olej, Slovene olje, Upper Sorbian wolij.
