Inherited from Old East Slavic печень (pečenĭ), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *pečenь. By surface analysis, печёный (pečónyj) +‎ ().

Cognate with Ukrainian печі́нка (pečínka), Polish pieczeń (roast), Czech pečenka (roast). Compare Lithuanian kẽpenys (liver), from kèpti (bake).
