From Old East Slavic печень (pečenĭ), synchronically analysable as печёный (pečónyj) +‎ (). Cognate with Ukrainian печі́нка (pečínka), Polish pieczeń (roast), Czech pečenka (roast). Compare Lithuanian kẽpenys (liver), from kèpti (bake).
