Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *päšťə, likely from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Cognates include Moksha пяште (päšte), Finnish pähkinä, Votic pähtšene, Livonian pē’gõz, Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš), Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, hazelnut bush) and possibly also Komi-Zyrian пашкан (paškan, rosehip).
