[edit]Proto-Slavic *porsę (“piglet”) + -о́нок/-ёнок (-ónok/-jónok, “diminutive suffix for baby animals”). Cognate with Serbo-Croatian prȃse, Czech prase, Slovak prasa, Polish prosię, Slovene prašič, Bulgarian прасе (prase).
