From пя́лить (pjálitʹ, to stretch tight, tauten) +‎ -цы (-cy), a back-formation from пя́ло (pjálo, frame onto which leather is stretched), from Proto-Slavic *pędlo, from *pęti (to stretch) + *-dlo.
