ремень

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *remy (genitive *remene). Cognate to Old East Slavic ремыкъ ‎(remykŭ), Old Church Slavonic рємєнь ‎(remenĭ), Ukrainian ремінь ‎(reminʹ); Bulgarian ремен ‎(remen), ремик ‎(remik), ремък ‎(remǎk); Serbo-Croatian ре̏ме̑н (genitive ремена), рѐмик; Slovenian rémen, jérmen; Czech řemen, Slovak remeň; Polish rzemień; Upper Sorbian rjemjeń, Lower Sorbian rjemjeń.

Despite the similarity to German Riemen (Old High German riomо), Vasmer concludes that the claim of some earlier dictionaries that the Slavic word is a loan of the Germanic one is phonologically impossible; see Riemen for more.
