[edit]From Proto-Turkic *čadan (“scorpion”). possibly from Middle Chinese 蠆 (ʈʰˠaiH) with a final -n added.
Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (čadan, “scorpion; (astrology) Scorpio”); Kazakh шаян (şaän, “scorpion”), Southern Altai сай (say, “scorpion”), Uzbek chayon (“scorpion”), Uyghur چايان (chayan, “scorpion”), Azerbaijani çayan, Turkish çıyan (“scorpion”).
