[edit]Ultimately from Ancient Greek σμᾰ́ρᾰγδος (smắrăgdos). Compare Ukrainian смара́гд (smaráhd), which is from (the Old East Slavic reflex of) Byzantine Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos), a derivation from the latter of which ostensibly also being possible for Bulgarian. Not mentioned in the Old Church Slavic Dictionary.
Doublet of изумру́д (izumrúd).
