Per Vasmer, onomatopoeic. Compare Latin strīdeō (to squeak, to crack, to buzz, to whistle), also strīdō (infinitive strīdere), Ancient Greek τρίζω (trízō, to twitter, to squeak, to chirp) (perfect τέτρῑγα (tétrīga)), στρίξ (stríx, (type of night bird)) (gen. sg. στρίγος (strígos)).
