Borrowing from English typhoon, probably ultimately of Sinitic origin, Mandarin 大风 ‎(dàfēng, big wind), Cantonese 大風 ‎(daai6 fung1, big wind), via Arabic طوفان ‎(ṭūfān), Hindi तूफ़ान ‎(tūfān), and Persian توفان ‎(tufân).
