[edit]Borrowed from English tractor. Further from Latin tractus (p.p.p of trahō) + -or. First attested at least as early as 1902, in the Russian translation of П. А. Кропоткин (P. A. Kropotkin), Хлеб и воля (Xleb i volja).
Compare typologically тяга́ч (tjagáč), волоку́ша (volokúša) (**волокушник). Note natively formed Polish ciągnik (i.e. **тягник).
