From Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nom, *(s)ter-n- ‎(sharp stalk or thorn), possibly derived from *ster- ‎(stiff). Cognate with Bulgarian трън ‎(trǎn), Slovene trn, Slovak tŕň, Russian тёрн ‎(tjórn) and терние ‎(ternije). Non-Slavic cognates include English thorn and Sanskrit तृण ‎(tṛ́ṇa, grass).
