Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nom, *(s)tern- ‎(sharp stalk or thorn), possibly derived from *ster- ‎(stiff). Cognate with Czech and Slovene trn, Bulgarian трън ‎(trǎn), Serbo-Croatian трн/trn, Russian тёрн ‎(tjorn) and терние ‎(ternije). Non-Slavic cognates include English thorn and Sanskrit तृण ‎(tṛ́ṇa, grass).
