Traditionally derived from Polish turma, from Middle High German turm, from Old French *turm, from Latin turrem/turrim, accusative singular of turris. But more likely from Proto-Turkic *türmä (prison); compare Tatar төрмә (törmä, prison), Kyrgyz түрмө (türmö, prison).
