By metathesis from Proto-Iranian *udráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *udrás, from Proto-Indo-European *udrós (aquatic, of water), from *wed- (water, wet). For other examples of such a metathesis see ӕрды́н (ærdýn) and ӕрду́ (ærdú).
