Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *čьrtogъ. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic чрътогъ (črŭtogŭ), Ukrainian черто́г (čertóh), Old Serbian чртог, чртаг. Per Vasmer, probably borrowed from Persian چارتاق (čârtâq, four-arch). See черда́к (čerdák, attic), another borrowing of the same term, for more information.
