Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *čečetъ. Cognate with Ukrainian че́чіт (čéčit), Slovene čečèt. Per Vasmer, of onomatopoeic origin and further related to Lithuanian kekùtis (type of siskin), kikìlis (linnet), kė́kštas (jay).
