Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Since Patrubány considered an Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian ʾzg (azg, branch), Persian ازغ (âzğ, a thing lopped (as vine-prunings); slip, cutting, scion), ازخ (âzax, twig, vine). The Iranian words have been compared to Ancient Greek ὄσχος (óskhos), ὄσχη (óskhē), ὤσχη (ṓskhē, vine twig), and derived from Proto-Indo-European.
