Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂l- ‎(to grind). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλέω ‎(aléō, to grind), Hindi आटा ‎(āṭā, flour), Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 ‎(aṣ̌a, ground), Persian آرد ‎(ārd, flour). Related to ալիւր ‎(aliwr) and աղօրի ‎(ałōri).

  1. (transitive) to grind (grain)
  2. (transitive) to pound, to reduce to powder
