Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from the preposition առ (aṙ, at, to, near by, before, etc.) and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Armenian *(h)ič- (site, settlement), a derivative of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *sed- (to sit).
