Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from the preposition առ (aṙ, “at, to, near by, before, etc.”) and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Armenian *(h)ič- (“site, settlement”), a derivative of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *sed- (“to sit”).
