Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂réw-is (“sun, sunshine”), from *h₂rew- (“to shine”); whence also Sanskrit रवि (ravi, “sun”).[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Related to արեգ (areg).

According to Martirosyan, Old Armenian արև (arew) / արեգ (areg) probably reflects an Indo-European or Armeno-Aryan poetically or sacrally marked designation of “sun”, replacing the Proto-Indo-European unmarked profane *sóh₂wl̥ (“sun”).[10]

According to Ačaṙean, in classical Old Armenian արև (arew) referred to the light of the sun, while արեգակն (aregakn) was used for the star itself.
