[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the aorist stem եղ- (eł-) of լինիմ (linim) + -ան- (-an-). The origin of եղ- (eł-) is uncertain. It may be inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to turn”) and cognate with Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō, “to be in motion, to go; to be; to become”), but the loss of *kʷ- is problematic. See also յեղում (yełum, “to change, to transmute”).

- եղանել ուրեք ― ełanel urekʻ ― to sojourn
- եղանել ընդ կնոջ ― ełanel ənd knoǰ ― to know a woman
- եղիցի՛ լոյս եւ եղեւ լոյս ― ełicʻí loys ew ełew loys ― let there be light! and there was light
- եղիցի՛/եղիցի՛ եղիցի՛ ― ełicʻí/ełicʻí ełicʻí ― amen, so be it, be it so
- մի՛ եղիցի ― mí ełicʻi ― God forbid!
- եղիցի թէ ― ełicʻi tʻē ― suppose, supposing that, that being supposed
