Old Armenian

Etymology

From եղ () +‎ -ան- (-an-). The verb is suppletive: part of the conjugation is filled by forms of լինիմ (linim).

Verb

եղանիմ (ełanim)  (aorist indicative եղէ or եղայ)

  1. to be, to become, to be created; to happen
    եղանել ուրեքełanel urekʻto sojourn
    եղանել ընդ կնոջełanel ənd knoǰto know a woman
    եղիցի՛ լոյս եւ եղեւ լոյսełicʻí loys ew ełew loyslet there be light! and there was light
    եղիցի՛/եղիցի՛ եղիցի՛ełicʻí/ełicʻí ełicʻíamen, so be it, be it so
    մի՛ եղիցիmí ełicʻiGod forbid!
    եղիցի թէełicʻi tʻēsuppose, supposing that, that being supposed
