Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed wholly from Parthian *tag(a)-bar(king, literally crown bearing) (compare Persian تاجور(tâjvar)) and reshaped under the influence of the suffix -աւոր(-awor). The first part is the source of Old Armenian թագ(tʿag), the second part goes back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰer-. Formation in Armenian as թագ(tʿag) + -աւոր(-awor) is unlikely.
