From earlier *խորհ (*xorh), from Middle Iranian *xvarh. Compare Persian خوال (xvâl, food). The spelling խահ (xah) is from earlier *խարհ (*xarh), from the same Iranian source. The forms խոխ (xox) and խախ- (xax-) reflect dialectal/post-classical developments.
