Synonyms

Old Armenian

Etymology

Perhaps a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Syriac ܩܠܦܐ (qəlāfāʼ, sheet of a book), ܩܠܦ (qəlaf, to remove the skin, bark), ܩܠܦܬܐ (qəlāftāʼ, husk, scale, shell). Another rendering of the word has survived in dialects as կլեպ (klep).

On the other hand, J̌ahukyan argues for a native (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European origin.

According to Ačaṙean, Georgian ყვლეფა (q̇vlepa) and Laz ღლეპა (ğlep̌a) are borrowed from Armenian.

Noun

կեղև (kełew)
