From Middle Iranian, from Proto-Iranian *varsayāmaka- ‎(hair-holder), compounded from *varsa- ‎(hair), whence Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 ‎(varəsa-, hair), Middle Persian wls ‎(wars, hair), Old Armenian loanword վարս ‎(vars), and a participle of Iranian *yām- ‎(to hold), whence Middle Persian yʾmk' ‎(jāmag), Persian جامه ‎(jāma). The compound survives also in Persian باشامه ‎(bāšāma).
