From Middle Persian yʾmk' (jāmag), from Proto-Iranian *yām- (to hold), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yámas, *yam- (to hold), from Proto-Indo-European *yém-o-s, from *yem- (to hold), Northern Luri جۆمںە (cømə), see also Sanskrit यम् (yam, to sustain). Compare Old Armenian վարշամակ (varšamak).
