Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *taš- ‎(to make, construct; to cut). Compare Middle Persian tʾšytn' ‎(tāšīdan, to cut, to cleave; to create), Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬱𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 ‎(tašaiti, to make, produce as carpenter), Persian تش ‎(taš, hatchet, axe), Sanskrit तक्षति ‎(tákṣati).
