Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ḱadyo-, from *ḱad- (to fall). This is not accepted by Ačaṙyan, because (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *ḱ- should yield ս- (s-).
