[edit]From ח־מ־ץ (kh-m-ts, “forming words relating to souring”) + ־ן (-n), ultimately calque of French oxygène via German Sauerstoff, a modern coinage from Ancient Greek ὀξύς (oxús, “sharp”) + γένος (génos, “birth”).
