Probably borrowed from German laut (according to) (from 15th century; chiefly in written style), shortened from Middle High German nāch lūte (according to the text of), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hlūdaz. Compare German Laut (sound) and Wortlaut (wording, exact text).
