إِي (ʔī)

  1. Used with وَ (wa) followed by a word referring to God, to make an oath that expresses agreement.
    إِي وَرَبِّي إِنَّكَ عَلَى حَقٍّ
    ʔī wa-rabbī ʔinnaka ʕalā ḥaqqin
    Yes, by God, you are right.
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 10:53:
      وَيَسْتَنْبِئُونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَ قُلْ إِي وَرَبِّي إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِينَ
      wayastanbiʔūnaka ʔaḥaqqun huwa qul ʔī warabbī ʔinnahu laḥaqqun wamā ʔantum bimuʕjizīna
      And they ask thee to inform them: "Is it true?" Say: "Yes, by my Lord, verily it is true, and ye cannot escape."
