From Middle Persian ʾls ‎(ars, tear), from Proto-Iranian (compare Avestan asrū-, asrūazan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit and Hindi अश्रु ‎(aśru)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱru-, from compound *dr̥ḱ-h₂eḱru- ‎(eye bitter) (compare *dáḱru-). Other cognates include Old Armenian արտօսր ‎(artōsr), Lithuanian ãšara, English tear.
