Arabic

Etymology

From اَلْ (al-) + أَبْنَاء (ʔabnāʔ), plural of اِبْن (ibn, son).

The second sense may be a short form of the phrase أَبْنَاء الْدَوْلَة (ʔabnāʔ al-dawla, literally sons of the state, i.e. the Abbasid Caliphate).
