Etymology[edit]

Uncertain but probably from modification of Byzantine Greek Βενετικός (Benetikós, Venetian) and Βενέτζια (Benétzia, Venice) and/or Venetian venedego under influence from بُنْدُق (bunduq, pebble, bullet, hazelnut) and ـِيَّة (-iyya, -ia), a variant of Ancient Greek Ἐνετικός (Enetikós, Venetian, Venetic, Enetic) under influence from Latin veneticus (Venetic, Venetian), both of uncertain origin but generally assumed to derive from a Venetic endonym.
