Etymology

From Byzantine Greek Σκουτάριον (Skoutárion), perhaps from Latin scūtārium, accusative of scūtārius (“guard armed with a shield”); however, Nishanyan does not rule out a derivation from Persian [script needed] (üsküdâr, “messenger station”). This city was originally called Χρῡσόπολῐς (Khrūsópolis) by the Ancient Greeks, a compound of χρῡσός (khrūsós, “gold”) + πόλις (pólis, “city”).
