Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (b’hl /⁠bahr⁠/, “portion”) with a common metathesis (as in سرخ‎ (sorx) from Middle Persian [Term?] (/⁠suhr⁠/)). Also retained in the forms بهر‎ (bahr) and بهره‎ (bahra).
