    • c. 1260s, Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī, translated by Reynold A. Nicholson, مثنوی معنوی [Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi], volume II, verse 254:
      هر که در دنیا خورد تلبیس دیو
      و ز عدوی دوست رو تعظیم و ریو
      har ki dar dunyā xwarad tablīs-i dēw
      u za 'adū-i dōst rō ta'zīm u rēw
      Whoever swallows the Devil's imposture in this world
      and (swallows) veneration and deceit from the foe that has the face (semblance) of a friend
